Sermon Series & Speaker Tracking
Ever wonder which sermon series drew the most people? Or whether attendance shifts when a guest speaker fills in? Vitals helps you track speakers and series alongside your metrics so you can see what resonates with your congregation.
Why Track Sermon Series?
Your sermon series is one of the biggest factors that influences week-to-week attendance — but most churches have no way to see the connection. By tagging each week with the current series, Vitals lets you compare:
- Which series drew the most people? Maybe your marriage series averaged 15% higher attendance than your Old Testament deep-dive.
- Which series had the highest giving? Generosity series often see a spike — now you can measure it.
- How long is too long? Did attendance start dropping in week 6 of an 8-week series? That's useful data for planning your next one.
- First-time guest patterns: Which series attracted the most new visitors? That tells you what's bringing people through the door.
Real example: Riverside Church discovered that their annual "Relationships" series in February consistently averaged 820 people — 18% above their normal 695. They now plan their biggest outreach push to coincide with that series every year.
Setting Up a Sermon Series
Adding a sermon series takes about 30 seconds. You can do it before the series starts or retroactively after it wraps up.
- 1Go to Settings → Sermon Series.
- 2Click "Add Series."
- 3Enter the series name (e.g., "Unshakeable Faith" or "Love Your Neighbor").
- 4Set the start and end dates. If it's ongoing, leave the end date blank.
- 5Click Save. The series is now available to tag on weekly data entries.
You can go back and tag past weeks with a series name — it's never too late to start tracking.
Standalone Sundays (not part of a series) can be left untagged or tagged as "Standalone" — your choice.
Speaker Tracking
Track who preached each week to spot patterns over time. This isn't about judging speakers — it's about understanding your congregation's engagement patterns.
- 1Go to Settings → Speakers to add your regular speakers.
- 2Enter each speaker's name (Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor, guest speakers, etc.).
- 3When entering weekly data, select the speaker from the dropdown.
- 4View speaker comparisons in your reports.
Real example: Faith Community Church noticed that attendance was 8% higher when their senior pastor preached vs. their associate pastor — but online viewers were 25% higher when the associate preached (because he promoted the livestream more on social media). Both pastors found that insight valuable.
Viewing Series & Speaker Data
Once you've tagged a few weeks, you'll start seeing sermon data woven into your dashboard and reports:
- Dashboard
- The current sermon series name appears at the top of your weekly view, so you always know which series was running when you look at any given week.
- Weekly Reports
- Reports include the series name and speaker for that week, so when your board reviews the numbers, they have full context.
- Date Range Comparison
- Compare one series against another to see which had higher attendance, giving, or engagement.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of This
Be consistent: Tag every week, even standalone Sundays. Gaps make comparisons less meaningful.
Use clear series names: "Unshakeable Faith - Jan 2025" is better than just "New Series" when you're looking back a year later.
Track guest speakers: Even if it's only once or twice a year, knowing how guest Sundays perform helps with future planning.
Review at year-end: Pull up a year of series data and look at which topics, lengths, and speakers produced the strongest engagement. Use that to plan next year's preaching calendar.
Don't overthink series length: The data usually speaks for itself. If attendance drops after week 4, consider shorter series. If it builds through week 6, your congregation likes going deep.
Common Questions
Can I tag past weeks with a series retroactively?
Yes! Go to any past week in Enter Data, select the series from the dropdown, and save. You can go back as far as you have data.
What if we have multiple services with different speakers?
You can tag the primary/main speaker for the weekend. If your 9am and 11am have different speakers, tag whoever preached to the larger crowd — or create entries for each service time.
Do sermon series sync from Planning Center?
Not currently. Series and speaker data is entered manually in Vitals. It's a quick addition when you enter your weekly data — just two dropdown selections.
